Somerset Academy Inc. was established to do what communities most need nonprofits to do: fill the gaps that neither government nor the market adequately addresses. Founded by Barbara Chavous-Pennock, this organization was built on an unwavering belief that every child—regardless of ability, background, or zip code—deserves access to high-quality educational environments and the community support structures that make those environments thrive.
From its earliest days, Somerset Academy Inc. has been defined by a refusal to accept the status quo. We have consistently pushed past institutional barriers to develop programming that is innovative, inclusive, and grounded in the real needs of the families we serve.
Evolution and Leadership
Today, Somerset Academy Inc. is a thriving 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a portfolio of nationally recognized programs. We are guided by the leadership of our founder, Barbara Chavous-Pennock, and are proud to announce that Somerset Academy Early Learning Center (SAELC)—our independent early learning partner—is flourishing under the visionary leadership of its CEO, Tiffany Chavous.
While Barbara Chavous-Pennock remains a principal of both Somerset Academy Inc. and SAELC, each entity functions with complete independence. They maintain separate board structures, distinct financial accounts, and independent corporate operations to ensure the highest standards of transparency and mission focus. Somerset Academy Inc. is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit arm dedicated to community empowerment, gun violence intervention, special needs advocacy, and workforce development. Somerset Academy Early Learning Center operates independently as a for-profit entity providing premium daily care and early instruction.
